Three types of Krispy Kreme donuts — original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles and chocolate iced “kreme” filled — will go on sale at McDonald’s restaurants starting later this year, the companies told CNN on Monday. Krispy Kreme is giving away a free glazed doughnut to guests who visit a Krispy Kreme location between 5 and 9 pm on Tuesday to celebrate the partnership. The addition of a Krispy Kreme donut to the McDonald’s customer’s breakfast order began as a test at 160 restaurants in Kentucky. But customers can buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts in other places, such as Walmart and other grocery stores. “By making Kreme Krispy accessible to fans nationwide through this partnership, we expect to more than double our points of access by the end of 2026,” said Krispy Kreme President and CEO Josh Charlesworth in a statement.

Dine Brands Global is considering an Applebee’s and IHOP combination, according to an earnings call on February 28. Dine Brands is the parent company of both restaurant chains. Because of the cost to build an Applebee’s, Dine Brands is “assembling a prototype” for another option. The revenue for the joint restaurants could double that of the standalone restaurants, the company said in the earnings call. Combination locations allowed these restaurants, such as Auntie Anne’s and Cinnabon, to expand past malls and into busier streetside spots.

New York CNN —Wendy’s is sweetening its breakfast lineup with a new treat that comes from an unusual place: Another fast food chain. Also, most Cinnabon locations haven’t yet opened for the day when Wendy’s sells breakfast, which ends at 10:30 am. Perhaps Wendy’s adding cinnamon pull-aparts might entice some dissatisfied customers of McDonald’s, which last year scrapped its McCafé bakery lineup that also included a cinnamon roll. The “Cinnabon Pull-Aparts” are made from sweetened dough that’s dunked in a glaze then baked with cinnamon, brown butter and sugar. The chain previously predicted that breakfast would make 10% of its sales, with figures reaching 8.5% in 2021 before Wendy’s stopped reporting individual sales for the morning menu.

New York CNN —Unexpected demand for Subway’s new footlong cookies has created a big cookie shortage, driving the new snack off the menu less than two weeks after its big debut. Because of the cookie’s surprising popularity, Subway has temporarily removed them from its app and third-party channels, like DoorDash, to manage demand. Subway also said that for the first time since 2016, it has added more restaurants than it lost. In the past few years under Chidsey’s purview, Subway chain has undergone a makeover in basically all aspects of its business, because it has struggled recently against its sub-slinging competition. However, some franchisees recently complained that they weren’t impressed with the new $6,000 slicers.

The permanent sides, called Subway Sidekicks, will be available across the US beginning January 22. Sidekicks marks a whole new menu category for Subway, best known for their sandwiches. The additions come from customers demanding more from the menu, according to Douglas Fry, Subway’s North America president. Technomic data shows that Subway also lags in sales for sides and snacks compared to its competitors. Yearly sales at Subway US restaurants are still much lower compared to its sandwich-making rivals.
